Bass Guitar Build

Product Design & Fabrication • 2023 • Personal Project

Overview

A fully functional 4-string jazz bass guitar designed and built from raw materials, completed with no prior woodworking or instrument-making experience. Role: Luthier
Tools: Fusion 360, Woodworking, Electrical work, Finishing

Problem

Bass guitars within my price range did not utilize the components that I wanted, and customization was too expensive.

My Approach

  • Research: Studied the anatomy of electric bass guitars, including scale lengths, neck curvature, wood types, and pickup configurations
  • Planning: Brought in a friend who sketched multiple body shapes and mapped component layout using CAD and physical mockups
  • Fabrication: Cut and sanded the body by hand, installed neck and frets, wired passive electronics, and mounted bridge/tuners
  • Iteration: Tested multiple pickup placements and adjusted neck angle and action for better tone and comfort
  • Feedback: Had the final instrument reviewed and tested by an experienced bassist for tone, playability, and feel
  • UX Decisions (in physical form!)

    Final Build

Passive 4-string bass with custom body shape and full functional electronics Play-tested and adjusted for proper intonation and comfort Total build time: ~100 hours over 1.5 years

    Reflection

This was one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever made. It taught me how to learn a physical skill from scratch, break down complex systems, and keep adjusting until things felt right—not just looked right. I’d love to eventually build a second version with active electronics and a CNC-cut body, but this first one will always be special.
