Bass Guitar Build
Product Design & Fabrication • 2023 • Personal Project
Overview
A fully functional 4-string jazz bass guitar designed and built from raw materials, completed with no prior woodworking or instrument-making experience.
Role: Luthier
Tools: Fusion 360, Woodworking, Electrical work, Finishing
Problem
Bass guitars within my price range did not utilize the components that I wanted, and customization was too expensive.
My Approach
UX Decisions (in physical form!)
- Body shape refined for comfort when seated or standing
- Chose lightweight wood to prevent shoulder strain during long play sessions
- Pickup placement tuned to reduce hum while preserving warmth and clarity
- Cable jack placed for minimal interference during movement
Final Build
Passive 4-string bass with custom body shape and full functional electronics Play-tested and adjusted for proper intonation and comfort Total build time: ~100 hours over 1.5 years

Reflection
This was one of the most satisfying things I’ve ever made. It taught me how to learn a physical skill from scratch, break down complex systems, and keep adjusting until things felt right—not just looked right. I’d love to eventually build a second version with active electronics and a CNC-cut body, but this first one will always be special.
